Windows 8 is fine. Some don't like the changes with the interface but the OS itself is fast on start up, has improved security, and some one nice stuff built in.

It's even possible to 'fix' Windows 8 by installing a free replacement start menu like Classic Shell and completely avoid the start screen.

As for if it's the best OS, that depends on your situation. If you have an older computer then you can go wrong with a GNU/Linux OS. Older versions of Windows aren't secure anymore since Microsoft stops supporting them with new security patches. That's not much of a problem if you choose a well maintained GNU/Linux distro.

If you need to run a Microsoft OS then try to use the newest one you can. That way you still get security updates.

Iphone 5 is the best, except it only has an onscreen keyboard. I think you will do fine with the onscreen keyboard though. Its surprisingly accurate with the spell check/correct and the letters blow up as you hit them.
